BarCamp Africa UK – London 7th November 2009

Sharing is caring!

I have been meaning to write about my experiences at BarCamp Africa UK but business has been very busy of late, which is never a bad thing!

The theme of BarCamp Africa UK was celebrating and discussing African development and innovation within the context of Technology.

The Event not only dealt with technology but also the effective application of tools to bring about development in its truest form.

On arrival at BarCamp Africa UK I was warmly greeted by the Event Organiser, Tony Burkston who showed me where the keynote speech was taking place.

The keynote speech was by Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah the CEO of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) who gave an insightful talk about some of the political challenges in Africa and how technology can improve the economic situation there.

Throughout the rest of the day many other presentations were given on varying topics revolving around Africa and technology. If you have never attended a BarCamp event they are classified as an Un-Conference. People wanting to talk on a subject write their topic on a board next to a suitable time slot for that day, and attendees can pick and choose which talks they go to. They are a great way to meet people from other professions, network and build business relationships, as well as to make new friends.

This was my second BarCamp event and due to the popularity speakers were asked to send through their presentation selection prior to the event, and a time was allocated for them.

Nexus Globalnet and our sister company, Nexus Powerline are investigating business opportunities in Nigeria and Ghana for deploying Wi-Fi and Broadband Powerline (BPL) networks, and I made some excellent contacts.

I would like to commend the organisers for a well run event and delicious food.

See you next time!
