What we've been up to
Social Brands 100

It's been a busy 2012 here at Nexus. here's a look back at some of the networks and events we've deployed through 2012. We've installed an outdoor Point-to-Multi-Point (PtMP) network for one of the largest outdoor Garden Centres and Pick-Your-Own in Europe. This came with it's own challenges with routes through and around trees and existing structures needed and power considerations for antennas located in the...

BT and TalkTalk appeal DEA judicial reviewBT and TalkTalk have confirmed they are launching an appeal after losing their judicial review of the Digital Economy Act (DEA).

The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) won the right to a review on the controversial legislation back in November, which would see illegal filesharers getting their internet connections cut off.

However, their claims the Act went against the EU Electronic Commerce Directive and the EU Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive were dismissed by the High Court in April, with Mr Justice Kenneth Parker claiming no directives had been breached.

eBay asks Ofcom to up mobile broadband game

Online auction giant eBay has called on Ofcom to help improve mobile network connectivity, claiming poor coverage was damaging the UK economy.

The nation is missing out on £1.3 billion of consumer spending as poor networks put people off shopping via their mobile devices, eBay commissioned research claimed.

The study suggested 16 per cent of the UK did not have adequate hot spots for shopping. In these areas, people spent at least 20 per cent less than the national average.

In what’s being described as the UK’s “largest ever FTTH initiative”, Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe will connect up to one million properties to i3 Group’s Fibrecity network within the next four years.

In July, Fujitsu began rolling out the fibre optic network to 68,000 homes in Dundee. By 2012, every home and business across the city is expected to have access to broadband capable of speeds of 100Mbps with boosts of up to 1Gbps.

The Canute Group continue to be one of the fastest growing, global supply chain providers operating today.

One of their UK operational centers required networking between two warehouse buildings. The existing network terminated at Warehouse One, however, there was a requirement to access the LAN and Internet at Warehouse Three (see map below). After a full site survey Nexus installed a BPL solution to network the warehouses together.

Objective

Nexus Globalnet were tasked by Timico, a unified communications service provider, with delivering a solution to extend the wireless coverage at Crystal Palace Caravan Club Site.
Crystal Palace Caravan Club Site

Our Solution

Our initial survey identified a major issue with RF interference from the Crystal Palace Transmitter which prohibited the deployment of an effective wireless network. Looking at alternative methods of delivery we decided on Broadband Powerline from Corinex Communications, the world’s largest system integrator and manufacturer of BPL In-Home and Enterprise hardware.

A few people have been asking us how we did the WiFi at BCL7, held at the IBM offices on Southbank, London 24-25th October 2009. So here are the details.

Our initial site survey identified a lot of existing WiFi devices in the area, all creating their own RF interference. For this deployment to work we needed hardware that could cope with constantly changing environments with people moving from room to room, and enough coverage to cope with the expected capacity demands. After all, BarCamp’s are the type of event where everyone will be wanting a connection, at some time or another!
